December 11-17 training update from Canmore

Greetings everyone,

We hope that you had a great week...check out the summary below for a brief summary of what we've been up to for the last week.
We all know that a picture is worth a thousand words, so we’ve included a few pics below to make sure that we don’t get too wordy…here’s the low down on what we were up to this past week on snow (we also had a great weekend with a hike on Saturday in Banff, and a pretty chilled day around the home base on Sunday with a matinee viewing of the newest Star Wars film…it’s not quite as good as the classic films from this series, but we recommend seeing it none the less).

We skied a ton of SL turns this week...
- approximately 5,000 turns in environments (combinations of brushes, stubbies, panels & long gates) plus an equal # of turns of drills and technical skiing...the crew got a lot done this week.

Tactical focus for SL week
  • Turn placement – depth
  • Clean turn entry…arcing (carving) above the gate
  • Square entry to combinations
  • Linking (direction at the gate…gotta bend it early)
  • Adaptability…lots of work with rhythm changes
  • Athleticism…always moving with power & purpose

Technical focus for SL week
  • Balance (4 planes)
    • Front – back
    • Lateral (side to side)
    • Rotational
    • Vertical
  • Lower leg skills
  • Pressure management
  • Timing & coordination

Physical focus for SL week

  • Pre-hab : increase durability… improve tissue quality (flexibility), mobility (ankles-hips-t spine) and stability (hip – trunk – shoulder (the pillar)) – this is a great daily opportunity to work on all aspects as well as improving symmetry on the right (weaker side)
  • Movement prep : nervous system activation…improve movement quality, increase blood flow and core temperature…get ready for the session ahead
  • Daily PT : variable themes including ice skating skills, energy system development (spinning & treadmill work), strength work (pushing, pulling and rotational strength), agility - coordination - movement skills, pillar (core) strength …1% better every day

Out for now...

Coming up this week...
- GS & freeskiing priority for the u14 group
- GS, SG & freeskiing priority for the u16 group
- some of the FIS group is racing at Panorama (2x GS, 2x SL) while Zac & Dani continue to plug away in Canmore.

On behalf of all of us here in Canmore - have a great week
